Painful lump of Montgomery Gland

Painful lump of Montgomery Gland

In the last month I have had 2 painful lumps of the Montgomery glands of my right breast.  With pressure, both produced a whitish-yellow pus lie substance.  Approximately 2 month ago I also had severe itching and some peeling of my right nipple.    I had a mammogram several weeks ago and it was clear.  The lumps were not present when  had my annual physical with my family physician.  Should I still be concerned and if so, what should be additionally?

Hi there.

Montgomery glands are modified sweat glands.  That being said, it is subject to the same pathologies or diseases that other sweat glands undergo.  The mechanism behind what you are experiencing is similar to that of furuncles, boils, or acne.

This would start by blockage of the pore by dead skin cells or dirt, and this can later become infected with bacteria causing some purulence or pus formation.

It is best to keep the involved glands dry and clean.  If you keep on getting this several times a month, I believe it is best to have this looked at by a doctor or a dermatologist.

Regards.
