Paternal cancer risk birad 3

by LynnAnne, Nov 03, 2009 08:16AM
I have always watched my cyclic changes in my breast since I was 20. Recently my half sister (father's daughter) was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer, and passed away 4 months ago. My father passed away from bone cancer 2 years ago. Although I know the genetic challanges of cancer itself.....my doctor had order a routine mammo last November, it came back that I needed a f/u mammo and a breast ultrasound. I repeated these test in January showing a 1.5 mm increase in 1 cyst. I was told to f/u in 6 months. I repeated the test in May, with little change (increase) in size and was given a birad 3 rating. My doctor called me and told me everything was fine. I started to have nipple discharge (greenish) and pain in my right breast (the pain has been happening on/off for a little over 2 years and has been getting progressively worse) I switched doctors and my new doctor stated that I needed another u/s done and then we may need to proceed with a biopsy. They sent me for a tsh and prolactin which came back wln, and received the call from my ob/gyn that he wants me to followup with a specialist. Short of losing sleep, I need some insight. We contacted my sister's mother and she stated that there has only been 1 family member on her side that has ever been diagnosed with cancer. Our father's side however, has a strong history of bladder, lung, bone, colon and now breast cancer. I am trying to only focus on the positive knowing that maternal sides are what the strongest is but do I have to worry?

I wouldn't put too much stock in family history even though it is a risk factor .... more cases of breast cancer are in women with no family history than with. It can be on either side too. Nipple discharge isn't necessarily associated with breast cancer and often not even abnormal. This is usually associated with a ductal issue of some sort. I would certainly follow any and all recommendations. Pain isn't usually associated with breast cancer either but is with Fibrocystic Breast Condition.   Regards ....
