Pathology Report Explanation

Please help me understand my pathology report!

"Essentially all of the core biopsies are the same containing a phyllodes tumor. The tumor contains branching and slit-like ducts lined by hyperplastic epethelium.  These ducts are surrounded by a fairly abundant stroma containing focal areas of increased cellularity. The stromal cells have a spindle shaped configuration and exhibit mild nuclear atypia focally.  In the more cellular area there are increased mitosis which in very focal areas average one per high power field. However, overall the mititic rate is highly variable with an average approaching approximately 2-3 per 10 high powered fields."

What is the risk I'm facing?

Dear JulieM,   Phyllodes tumor referrs to lesions that can range from benign (non-cancerous) to malignant (cancerous).   Many will be classified as benign and not require further evaluation. A skilled pathologist is needed to distinguish a benign phyllodes tumor from one with more aggressive malignant potential.  The results of pathology need to be interpreted in context of your medical history, test results, physical examination.  Your physician would be best able to interpret these results for you as related to your individual situation.
