Pathology report for Atypical Ductal Hyperplasia

Pathology report for Atypical Ductal Hyperplasia

I had a stereoscopic biopsy a few weeks ago, Monday I go for wire excisional biopsy. After reading about ADH here I see people get gradings for ADH. My pathology report just says 1. Benign Duct 2. Fibrocystic breast disease 3. Atypical Ductal Hyperplasia  with no grading or any details. Is this really enough to warrant a surgery on Monday? I doubt if my doctor has even looked at the slides. Now I want to see my slides and have them show me exactly what they are seeing and how much and how bad it is. Is it usually possible to view your slides and have someone explain it. My mamo showed two very very tiny clusters of microcalcifications which is why they biopsied the site in the first place. If pathology comes back with anything after surgery. I really want to see the slides and have someone explain it all. As I feel like I am blind and relying on one persons opinion. I have heard visual interpretation is all relative and its hard to tell ADH from DCIS is this true? Anyway thanks for answering my question. I guess I am in fear and reaching out for help.

Dear vetiver:  Though it is not possible to be certain, we suspect that the rationale for an excisional biopsy is to be certain that the entire area in question is benign and that there are no areas of additional pathology that were not sampled in the needle.  Pathology slides are reviewed by pathologists and while most physicians have a basic understanding of how cells look under the microscope, pathologists are the doctors that are best suited to make the final determinations of what a given slide shows.  It is not standard to show these to patients and most medical institutions are not set up to do so.  Rather, if you are concerned about the interpretation of the slides, you could have them sent to another pathology lab for review.  Those pathologists would look at the slides and form their own conclusions.

Had my surgery on Monday, it all went well. I felt like normal the next day except for a bad headache from not drinking coffee the day before. My breast is swollen but the incision is way on the right and not that bad. They followed the wire into my breast. Now I await the pathology. Today I got a preliminary that they had a quick look and don't see anything awful but still need to put the stuff through some process. Im not sure what. My nurse practitioner is feeding me this info coz she loves me and I will be indebted to her for support in all of this. She has been such a gift and a blessing. I will post here when I know my results for sure. blessings

I am so glad all went well for you. I have been looking to see if you had posted and just apparently overlooked it. When will you know for sure about the report?
I went to my new Dr. and he was great! He is sending me to an Oncologist, he says I am a good candidate for Tamoxifen. He also said I have a large Hematoma from the surgery. I have to go back in 4 weeks. If it has liquified he will aspirate it, if not he said he may have to open the incision. I hope it will go away on its on. But so far it is the same.
Please let me know when you receive your results, I have been keeping a watch on here to see how you were. The actual precedure is not as bad as you think it will be in most cases.

I got my results. NO BREAST CANCER, totally benign. Not even the original diagnosis of Aypical Ductal Hyperplasia. Its all baffling to me. Im so relieved. He took a huge chunk, 7.4 cm by 4.4 cm by 2.2 I cant believe he took such a big chunk of my breast. I wonder why he did that. Now I have to wait for the swelling to go down to see how my breast will look. If it looks too funky I will need to get it fixed somehow. Any way for now its time to have fun and get on with my life. I have been waiting five months for this to be over. Many blessings
