Phyllodes or Fibroadenoma?

by heatherfeather83, Sep 17, 2008 11:30PM
I would recommend that all fibroadenomas should be biopsied or removed, because that is really the only way to know what it really is. I am a 24 year old female. When I was 19 I found a marble sized lump in my left breast. My general practitioner, a breast specialist, a radiologist, and a gynecologist all agreed separately that it was a fibroadenoma. I recently decided to have it removed because it bothered me when I wore bras (because it was right next to the underwire/elastic) and it sometimes hurt. However my pathology reports came back that it is actually a benign Phyllodes tumor, and now my surgeon wants to do a partial mastectomy to excise the surrounding tissue. My question is: is there any reason for me to get a full mastectomy, to ensure that it cannot recur and become malignant? Should I get a second opinion on the pathology report, to be sure that it is benign?

I had a fibradenema that was biopsied in 2001 that was benign it sat there for years and in June of this year it quickly grew to a very large size when surgically removed it was a malignant phyllodes. The Phyllode tumors can actually come about from the fibroadenemas.

No one can really tell you whether or not a mastectomy is a good option for you as it is a VERY personal decision and sometimes there are other treatment options available.  If you're questioning your surgeon's recommendation, I would recommend just getting a 2nd opinion from another surgeon to make you that much more confident in your decision.  Some women don't want a mastectomy, regardless of survival or recurrence rates.  Others want a double mastectomy (I was one of them at a stage II) even if it is a carcinoma in situ with no family history!  Good luck to you and I hope all turns out well!
