Possible Phyllodes tumor - can removal wait?

Possible Phyllodes tumor - can removal wait?

I had a core biopsy and 5 samples were taken. Two were 'clear', but the other 3 showed an abundance of some type of cell which I was told could indicate Phyllodes tumor.  I was also told they "strongly" believe it to be benign, but they've referred me to a surgeon who wants to remove it next Wed. (along with another fibro adenoma tumor I've had for 8 years).

My question is would there be any reason why I couldn't wait 14 weeks to have it removed when our health insurance benefit account re-starts for the new year?

Update: The surgeon's office called me yesterday after I posted, and gave me information on costs.  I asked her if there was any medical reason that would argue against me waiting until January, and she said no, not at all. "The surgery is for your peace of mind".

Seriously?  If there is no medical reason for the surgery, why should I have it done at all?

Thoughts anyone?

Do not wait. I had a fibro that sat and did nothing for several years but in a matter of days enlarged to a malignant phyllodes tumor. I had it removed with clear margins and so far am OK but they do like to come back and can metasticise??? sorry I still cant spell!!! I had great treatment at Forsyth Hospital in Winston Salem NC. Please update as to what you decided. Also you can check out the rare cancer forum on yahoo they have a phyllodes section.

Phyllodes tumors can be benign or malignant. If malignant they are very fast growing. A needle biopsy cannot definitely define Phyllodes from Fibroadenoma so complete removal is usually recommended. I suppose you could wait ... it depends on how much of a gambler you are about such things (like you health). If you are saying that you have no Ins. benefits at the moment I can understand you wanting to wait. That's more than 3 months though .... it would be too long for me. There definitely is a medical reason ... complete removal is standard medical practice for Phyllodes tumors due to the potential of their being malignant and fast growing.  Regards ....
