Post Operation

had an irregular tumour with central cavity 35 x 20mm removed. relatively well circumscribed but abuts on the anterior margin and is present within 3mm of the posterio margin. mass fo tissue partially haemorrhagic. Grade II.
1 of 8 lymph nodes show features of metstatic carcinoma.
diagnosis: adjacent high grade DCIS (abutting on resection margin)
1/8 lymph node metastases
I was told after surgery that I was well and cancer free and would that radiation would be recommended as a precautionary measure. it has now been suggested that I have chemo, hormonal and then radiation trreatment. I am very confused and distressed at present and would welcome any information which would help me. I am also keen on alternative therapy.

Hi there.

If this were pure DCIS with negative margins and negative lymph nodes, then a radiation therapy would be sufficient treatment.  However, the pathology findings reveal that you have metastasis to one lymph node and this may mean that the tumor is not entirely DCIS and may have harbored areas of invasive cancer.  I suggest you discuss with your surgeon regarding the possibility of re-excision of the tumor area since the tumor is very close to the margins.  Also, inquire about the hormonal status of the tumor if you will be a candidate for hormonal treatment.  I believe that your doctors have your best interest at hand when they recommend all these treatments.  Take caution in alternative treatments since a lot of these are scientifically unproven and some are just out to make money (these are not cheap either).
