Post chemo surgery for metastic cancer

Post chemo surgery for metastic cancer

I had breast CA in 1999, ER+, no lymph node involvement. Was treated with lumpectomy, followed by CMF chemo and radiation. In August 2009, a new cancer was found in same (left breast). This cancer is HER neu+. Pet scan showed lymph node involvement and some cancer in sternum bone which was confirmed by a sternum bone biopsy. Rather than do surgery first, chemo  with taxol Herceptin, zometa) was recommended. A PET scan and MRI at the end of February showed the lymph node involvement had resolved and the sternum involvement had resolved. The mass in the breast is still there, but it has shrunk from 2.5cm to 1 cm in size. I will finish with 8 cycles of this chemo treatment in mid April. The recommendation is to remove the breast and possibly also radiation of the sternum bone area either before or after surgery.

My questions is, since I have (had) metastatic breast CA (sternum and lymph node involvement) will it be beneficial to remove the breast with the tumor in it since the cancer had already spread outside the breast?
My surgeon and oncologist recommend surgery because they feel the breast tumor is seeding the cancer. What are your thoughts on this?

Dear Susanbandes, The recommendation does not seem unreasonable however through this forum we cannot give specific recommendations regarding an individual situation.
