Postmenopausal Fibroadenoma

Postmenopausal Fibroadenoma

I had a recent breast MRI because of dimpling on the areola.  The radiologist said it was a fibroadenoma in the area of the dimpling.  He did not believe it was causing the dimpling.  I thought only young women or postmenopausal women on HRT got these benign tumors.  I am postmenpopausal and have never taken HRT.
Also, what else could cause the dimpling?  The radiologist mentioned early Paget's disease but my doctor did not mention it.
I read the report when I got home and haven't been able to contact the doctor yet.
Thanks for any input.

Dear emgscot:  While fibroadenomas are more common in younger women, it is possible to develop a fibroadenoma at any age.  In younger women, there is usually no reason to remove them as long as they are not causing problems and there is certainty that they are, in fact, fibroadenomas.  In older women, they are often removed to be certain they are fibroadenomas.  You may want to discuss with your doctor the possible explanations for the dimpling.  Without evaluation, including review of the films and physical examination, it is not possible for us to speculate on possible causes.  If you are concerned you may consider a second opinion from a breast specialist.  These are often affiliated with large academic medical centers.
