Question about Hypoechoic lesion

by shygirl97128, Nov 08, 2009 07:01PM
I am 33 and just had my second mammo. The first one says: the breast parenchyma has been somewhat fatty replaced with mild bilateral parenchymal asymmetry, there is the presence of 1 or 2 small nodules. These are for the most part well defined, and at least one shows an eccentric fatty center, the hall mark of a lymph node(I understand the lymph node part, but the rest).  What does that mean? and the second one now six months later shows 2 nodules in the upper inner quadrant of the right breast, with smooth margins and no architectural distortions. They are smooth marginated and hypoechoic. There is a slight back wall enhancement, but no definite through transmission. they are aproximately 8 mm. I don't know what hypoechoic means, and what do they mean by "slight back wall enhancement, but no definite through transmission" I have to return in another six months. But I have been having pain for a week and a half went to the doc and she said if it is still hurting in 3 weeks go back. sould I be more worried?

First of all pain is rarely associated with breast cancer. Hypoechoic simply means that less waves are reflected than would normally be expected. The back wall shows enhancement (lights up) but the waves are not transmitted through the area. It seems there are still 2 nodules found and the fact that they have smooth margins and there is no architectual distortion is a favorable finding. Perhaps a different type of imagery might be of help rather than having another mammogram so soon (if you go back in 3 weeks). Are you seeing a Breast Specialist ?? If not I think it would be a good idea and to have your films reviewed by him/her.    Regards ....

I'm sorry, the mammogram found the nodules and then I had an ultrasoundafter both mammograms, and these reports are from the US. After the first mammogram the radiologist said I could have  a biopsy, but I opted not to, then changed my mind. But the  surgeon talked me out of it, now I am thinking I should have stuck to my guns. My doc just said if there is still pain in the breast to go back in 3 weeks and she will the do some tests I guess.
I have another mammo in march, but I am also wondering how long these lesions will show before anything is done about them. I am considered a birad 3 on both mammograms.

A BIRADS 3 doesn't call for a biopsy so I would follow the recommendation of the Radiologists .... they read these films on a daily basis and pretty much know what they are seeing on them. I don't know what type of tests could be done considering breast pain itself .... breast pain can be from almost any source but rarely breast cancer. I doubt that any Surgeon would encourage a pt. to have a biopsy with only a BIRADS 3 score. Follow-up seems more reasonable than an invasive procedure without definite reason.   Regards ....
