Can Radaition cause Diabetes by attacking the pancreas ?

Hi there.

If the pancreas is exposed to significant doses of radiation, then yes, it is indeed possible to develop diabetes mellitus.  Radiation injury to the pancreas can take the form of an acute or chronic form of pancreatitis which will eventually damage the pancreatic cells.

One of these cells are the islet cells which produces insulin.  Damaging these cells will eventually lead to diabetes.

However, not all radiation to pancreas would lead to pancreatitis and it is best that the person keeps on following up with the doctors.
