Radiation Burns

by Web22, Mar 14, 2008 01:00PM
My mother -in-law is in the last week of her radition for Breast Cancer and her skin is dark purple at the radiation site.  Will this burn or bruise go away and how soon?  Is there any cream or oil that she can rub on it to help it heal?

Thank you.

Dear Web22:  It is not uncommon for people to experience skin changes during radiation therapy.  This will become better with time once the radiation therapy has stopped.  There are some creams that are okay to use on skin that is being radiated.  These are recommended by the radiation oncologist or the nurse.  You mother-in-law should contact her radiation oncologist who can examine her and give recommendations for cream if appropriate.

I had sever radiation burns and I was prescribed Silvaden (spelling?) Cream by my radiation oncologist.  It looks like white frosting and goes on thick.  It felt so good to put that cream on.  I started using it around week 5 and used it for a couple/few weeks after.  I'd ask about it today.  Also the burn/bruise will go away as the skin heals after radiation is completed.  I finished up last June and the area now just looks tan.

Best Wishes to you both!
