Radiation for LCIS?

Radiation for LCIS?

I was recently diagnosed with LCIS, and after being referred to an oncologist she suggested I undergo radiation therepy.  Nothing I hear or read suggests this as a treatment for LCIS.  Would like your thoughts on this suggestion.  Thanks!  I'm new to this site.

You are correct; usually the recommendation is frequent self exams, yearly or sometimes more often, Mammograms, Chemoprevention drugs; Tamoxifen, etc. In the past surgery was also recommended but that isn't the norm today. LCIS is NOT actually cancer but it does increase one's lifetime risk of developing breast cancer. Unless there are other factors that you didn't mention, such as a strong family history, I don't really see the need for Radiation. I would suggest that you get a second opinion from another Oncologist before making any decisions.    Regards .....

Thank you!  I do not have family history of breast cancer and see no other factors in my report that would suggest that I be a candidate for radiation!  I will definitly consult with another oncologist before I make my decision!
