Recent Diagnosis Paget's Right Breast

by Vicki1944, Dec 24, 2008 05:17PM
Diagnosed 12/23/08 with Paget's Rt. Breast.  Symptomatic about 6 weeks.   Many unasnwered  questions.   Lumpectomy vs Mastectomy.   Radiation risk if Lumpectomy.   Cure rate for Paget's - unable to find much info.  Is Paget's so rare that there aren't any stats?  Obviously, very frightened.  Not sure what to do.  Surgery set for 1/15   Must decide Lump vs Mast.  Instinct says mastectomy, no radiation.  Had MRI today. What are chances of more cancer in body?  No mass shows on mammogram or ultrasound, or by exam.   Biopsy revealed diagnosis.
Thank you for your prompt reply and opinion

Dear Vicki1944:  Most paget's disease of the breast is associated with an intraductal cancer within the breast.  Pagets represents about 5% of all breast cancer.  Treatment could include mastectomy or lumpectomy (usually with radiation).  Statistics would be similar to those for intraductal cancer.  Your doctor (or possibly an oncologist) should be able to discuss this with you based on your situation to help you determine which intervention would be best for you.
