Recent completion of Radiation Therapy

Recent completion of Radiation Therapy

I was diagnosed with DCIS in the right breast.  Had 2 lumpectomy's on the first surgery and 1 on the second.  Completed the 33 day radiation requried.  But about 2 weeks into the treatments my neck (the right side mostly) began to have severe muscle spams.  I could feel the muscle tighten to the point where I couldn't relax it resulting in not being able to turn my head without extreme pain.  Then it moved to the left side.  All along the back of my neck was also spasming.  It has been very painful - I tried a chiropractor and then his massage therapist.  It doesn't help.  I've taken muscle relaxers and anti-inflammatorys - nothing works.

Any idea as to what this is?  The radiation doctor said it wasn't a result of the radiation.  I feel it is since it happened at the same time and has been with me throughout and now I am 2 weeks into a regular routine and it is still as severe.

What should I do or who should I see next?

Thank you.

Dear Ginger5098:  Radiation therapy is generally directed to breast tissue only and while there may be some scatter, the neck is not generally exposed.  As such, it is unlikely that your neck discomfort is directly related to the radiation therapy, although it is possible the the postitioning involved has contributed.  Without evaluation, it is impossible for us to speculate on what this may be.  You should consider having your doctor evaluate and refer to a specialist if indicated.
