Reconstruction options after radiation

Reconstruction options after radiation

I had breast cancer 11 years ago which was treated with a lumpectomy and radiation therapy of the affected breast.  The cancer recently returned in the exact same area (only one breast), but this time I opted for a double mastectomy.  I want reconstruction and it seems like the tissue expander followed later by silicon breast implants is the easiest approach, but I have heard that tissue expansion should not be used on the side that received the radiation therapy 11 years ago.  Is this true?  What kind of reconstruction is adviseable in my case?  If I can't use the tissue expander and implant on the irradiated side, would it be OK on the non-affected, non-irradiated side, and would you advise this?

Dear Josie508:  Tissue that has been radiated may not respond as well to plastic surgery.  However, this judgment would best be made by a plastic surgeon, experienced in reconstruction, who can review your situation, evaluate the condition of the skin, and make recommendations in this context for the most advisable approach to reconstruction.  In this situation, you might even consider meeting with a couple of experienced plastic surgeons.
