Recurrent Breast Cancer & Now Rib Pain

Recurrent Breast Cancer & Now Rib Pain

I was diagnosed with DCIS in the L-Breast in Feb 2008 and opted for bilateral mastectomy. Thank goodness I consistently went to follow-up appointments because just last week I was diagnosed with an aggressive recurrence, via a large tumor on the upper L-Breast area.  I've also begun to experience a pain in between my left ribs.  I thought it may be muscular however other symptons are now manifesting, such as sharp pain when sneezing, slight "swelling" and painful during movement.  Since last week, I've had the new breast tumor biopsied, and MRI and scheduled for a PET scan this coming week.  The MRI found that at least one node on the L-side has been affected.  Is it possible that this pain that has surfaced in the rib area is metastatic breast cancer?  Will the upcoming PET scan be able to show whether it is or not?

Dear pnkrbbn:  It is possible that the rib pain you describe could be breast cancer but it could also be a variety of other things.  A PET scan shows areas of hypermetabolic activity which can be associated with malignancy but can also show up if you fell and broke the rib.  So, a PET scan could increase or decrease the level of suspicion but is not the end all be all.  All tests need to be considered within the context of the situation.
