Red bumps

Recently I have had a series of small almost pin-head size red dots or bumps on my breasts. One or two at a time. This morning I found a large one, more pimple like, but larger, dark red center, no discharge and the skin around is scaly. It does not hurt, but is much larger than the small ones I have noticed in the past. I had read once about a very rare type of breast cancer that appeared like this and often went undiagnosed. Is there such a thing? Should I wait to see what happens to this newest bump or does it warrant a visit to my doctor. I am 43 and have no breast cancer history in my family.  Thank you.

Dear pepesmom:  You are referring to inflammatory breast cancer which often appears suddenly.  The breast appears red, warm to touch and often swollen. Your description is not typical of breast cancer.  I think it makes sense to monitor this bump for a week or so.  It is more likely a pimple but if it gets worse or you develop more symptoms, consult your physician for evaluation.

multiple pinhead dots is not a pattern typically associated with cancer, and is much more likely a skin problem, such as folliculitis. However, online evaluations are just guesses: new findings are best evaluated by your doctor.
