Redness of breast after lumpectomy

Redness of breast after lumpectomy

It has been 4and 1/2 weeks since the re-excision of the lumpectomy site. About 10 days after each of the surgeries, my breast became very red. I didn't think it was noticeably swollen, and did not have a fever, but each time I was prescribed Keflex (500mg). I don't know if I really have an infection. It is still somewhat red, and I am on my 12th day of Keflex. I am supposed to begin radiation in 4 days. Will radiation make it worse? Thanks.

Hi there.

These events may still be a part of the entire healing process, especially having surgery twice.  The problem is that radiation can indeed make things worse by inducing more inflammation, swelling and redness on the overlying skin.  Your consideration of infection is valid and I believe that this would warrant another evaluation by your surgeon and possibly receive a course of antibiotics.

I believe that this redness should be resolved first before you have the radiation because this can really make matters worse.

Regards and God bless.
