Removing Fibro adenoma

I am 42 with a family history (sister) of breast cancer. a mamogram identified a suspious mass. Ultrasound and biopsy  concluded that I had a fibro adenoma with stromal cellular structure. Pathologist and surgeon recommend lumpectomy. Everything I read says no need to remove. I am not in pain didnt even know I had a lump before mammogram. Surgery is Monday and I am nervous. What is your opinion?

I think with your family history it would be prudent to have it removed.  Better to be safe.

Hi there.

Firboadenoma is indeed a benign tumor and would usually just require observation.  If your doctors would want to remove the tumor, it can be possible that they are not totally convinced about the biopsy result, or there is reason to suspect that other problems exist in the areas not sampled by the needle.

I suggest you discuss in depth with your surgeon about the pros and cons of the procedure, or if he suspects that the tumor is harboring something else.

Regards and God bless.
