Saline Implants - Breast Cancer

by DonnaT, Aug 25, 2002 12:00AM
Hello,

I am 40 years old, have an Aunt and her 2 daughters that all had breast cancer (each had it differently).  Their fields, behind their home, was sprayed with chemicals long ago, many people on their street have come down with various cancers.

My question is,(I know it is in my bloodlines), I want to get saline breast implants.

I have read that implants do not cause cancer - just make it harder to detect.

Would it be better to have the implant, under the pectorial muscle or over it?  I understand that there are other ways (along with mamograms) to have your breasts examined (ie: ultrasound).

Does anyone have an opinion?
Thank you.

Dear Donna:  You are correct in that implants do make detection of breast cancer, namely mammograms, more difficult.  Ultrasounds can be done but not to replace mammograms.  Some physicians believe it is better to have implants under the pectoralis muscle if one must do implants.
