Seeking medical resources for indigent care

One of my family members just found out she has breast cancer. They do not have the finances to seek medical help from a doctor much less the cost of hospital expense.

Please, if you know of any organization that offers this type of financial aid, would you be so kind as to help her.

We are in the Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas area.

I had breast cancer 5 years ago and went through the wringer.  A year after finishing treatments, I told my oncologist that I was about to lose my health insurance (and since have).  He said at that time that even if I lost it, I should continue to see him and that he would see me for free.  (I haven't gone back though)

I also know that there are surgeon's who will do surgery pro gratis (free).  Try contacting a social worker at a hospital/clinic in your area.  Explain your families situation and I guessing you will find direction to get help.

I know how scary it is to be poor and in bad health.  I am grateful that I had the insurance when I went through it.  But I also know how many people are out there without any.  Myself included now.  It will mean alot of phone calls on your part, but I would definately start with a social worker at a hospital.  They should be able to help.

All the best to your relative and all the best to you all.  By the way, if you want ACTUAL answeres to questions regarding breast cancer treatments (more than ANY of your dr.s will give you-get a book by Dr. Susan Love...It's called something like the breast book.  All bookstores have it and it really is a good book, and right on the money.  And it explains everything that your dr.s don't/won't tell you.

Be strong. Milly

Start at the link below. I'm sure there are other organizations closer to you, but this organization can probably help you find them.

If they are truly without funds there must be some form of Public Assistance in your State. The American Cancer Society would be another place to look for possible funding. They might have other recommenations also. One other place since you are in Texas might be the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The founder of this organization lives in Texas so I know there are affiliates there. Best of Luck to all of you.
