Should I be worried about breast calcifications?

Should I be worried about breast calcifications?

I am a 62 year old who had her yearly mammogram on April 23.  I was told it showed left breast
calcifications.  On May 1, another mammogram was taken which was indeterminate.  I am scheduled
for a stereotactic breast biopsy on May 7.  My sister who is 64 now, had a partial mastectomy when
she was 23 (she was told suspicious cells and things were quite different back then).  In 2000, she
had a lump in her other breast and had a mastectomy.  She has been through chemo and radiation
and is cancer free.  Should I be VERY worried??  No breast cancer on my mother or fathers side
that I know of (although my mother died of lung cancer at 75 and had smoked for many years.  I have
never smoked).  I have always been in good health, young for my years, but am quite worried.

Calcifications are a normal finding when seen scattered about within the breast tissue. It is when they are observed in certain patterns or clustered that they are of some concern. A biopsy is necessary to determine the cause of these calcifications. Many biopsies done for calcifications return a benign result so they are not always an indication of cancer. There is no way to speculate as to whether yours are due to cancer or some benign condition. If the biopsy should reveal the cause to be cancer it would certainly be at a very early stage since there was no lump or other abnormality evident on your Mammograms. Although family history does increase a woman's risk' the other factors you mention don't really have anything to do with the incidence of breast cancer. Good luck with your biopsy.
