Should I see a surgeon

by jt513, Jan 15, 2009 09:06AM
I went for a routine mammogram and was told I had microcalcifications and should have a stereotactic core needle biopsy.  I did this and received a report with the following diagnosis "Intraductal papilloma with epithelial hyperplasia, areas of hyalinization and microcalcifications".  There were also fibrocystic changes and focal sclerosing adenosis.
I am 69 years old.  The radiologist recommended that I see a surgeon.  I have made an appointment to see a surgeon, but I am a little apprehensive because I don't know if surgery is necessary after reading up on this condition.
However, I don't want to do nothing and find that later it may develop into cancer.  Can you give me some advice or questions to ask the surgeon when I see him?  Thanks.

You are wise to follow the recommendation and make the appnt. with a Surgeon. Whether surgery is appropriate in your case will be the first question to ask the Surgeon. He/she will review your films and Pathology report and make a decision based on those results. It is often advised to remove these areas to prevent any further development. I'm not sure what questions to tell you to ask of the surgeon but a good rule of thumb is to ask "Why" to whatever statements are made. If you think of anything specific that you need to know you might be wise to write it down so you don't let it slip your mind at the time of the appointment. Don't feel rushed ... don't hesitate to say "wait, I still have questions". If you speak up you will be heard.   Good Luck ......
