Should I wait 6 months?

Should I wait 6 months?

I am a 37 yr old female who experiences fibrocystic changes in  my breasts.  I had a mammogram 2 days ago and was called back for an ultrasound and 2 spot compression mammograms today.  There is a 1cm spot in question that did show on my mammogram 1 and 1/2 years ago, but is more defined now. It did not show up on ultrasound today. Since it does look different on the latest mammogram and did not totally disappear on the spot compression mammogram the doctor is questioning it and told me to come back in 6 months for a follow-up mammogram. She believes it's just benign tissue. My 46 yr old half-sister was diagnosed with breast cancer 3 months ago. We have the same mother but different fathers. There is no other family history of breast or ovarian cancer that I know of. Because of my sister's cancer and because I've watched my friend battle breast cancer for 5 years that has spread to her bones and liver, I am apprehensive about waiting 6 months. But since the spot has been there since my last mammogram and since I have so many cysts, I don't believe it would be anything to worry about. So why am I still worried?!  Should I seek a second opinion or request another mammogram at a time in my cyle when my breasts are less tender?  Has anyone else been in a similar situation?

Dear Zeringue, An ultrasound test is used generally to distinguished between a fluid-filled cyst or solid area.  With so many cysts it does get difficult to locate an abnormal area, however with something changing that is a good reason to further pursue the cause of the changes.  The next step other than rechecking another mammogram 6 months from now, might be to biopsy this area.  A physician specializing in breast disease is who you would seek a second opinion from.  They would want to review the mammograms and testing you have already had in order to give their recommendations.
