Should my sister be worried?

by MaryC23321, Mar 10, 2008 02:19PM
My sister found a lump in her breast, she has had a tumor removed when she was 10, she has fibrocystic breasts. The lump is located on the outer edge of her nreast where a mole that is now changing. She has had 2 mamograms and a ultrasound. She was told now she needs a needle biopsy. Are these signs of cancer?

Dear MaryC23321:  In general, a new lump that can be felt requires evaluation.  A mammogram and ultrasound, as well as clinical examination are tools to help evaluate what the lump might be and what additional testing should be done.  If a mammogram and ultrasound cannot rule out cancer, a biopsy may be recommended to determine the exact nature of the lump.  It is not a sign of cancer.  Rather, it is a test to help determine what the lump may be. A changing mole may also require further evaluation but may be unrelated to the breast lump.
