Sonographic Core Biopsy w/out mammotome

Sonographic Core Biopsy w/out mammotome

It was recently discovered that I had a solid ovid nodule on my left breast. A unltasound discovered the nodule. I cannot see it or fill it. Today I had a sonographic core biopsy w/out mammotome. The nodule did not contain fluid. It was solid. How certain can I be that this type of biopsy was best for my situation? Is the sonographic biopsy accurate? Should I draw any conclusions that the nodule was solid and not fluid filled?

Dear keebler1119, The tissue obtained from the specimen is the amount of tissue that is the hollow of the needle.  With a core biopsy the size of the needle is greater than the size of the needle used in a needle biopsy.  The Mammotome is a handheld, ultrasound-guided, high technology devise, that is used under ultrasound or stereotactic guidance to obtain a tissue sample. So the core specimen obtained under sonogram is similar to the core specimen obtained with the Mammotome under sonogram guidance.

The amount of accuracy will be gauged by the radiologist who did the procedure as well as the pathologist who is reviewing the specimens obtained.  If a negative result is obtained (meaning no abnormality is found), evaluation is made as to whether or not the specimen was adequate.  If it is felt that the specimen was a true reflection of the remainder of the nodule then you should be told that.  If it is felt that the specimen was not adequate then a possible recommendation might be removal of the remaining nodule.

The only conclusion that can be drawn from the finding that this nodule was not fluid-filled, is that this is not a cyst (a fluid filled structure).

The original sonogram would have made it pretty clear that it's not a cyst (fluid-filled) which is why the biopsy was done. The sonographically controlled biopsy is quite accurate; the needle can be seen sonographically to be within the target area. Unless there were particular problems in your case, the one who did the procedure would be able to say it was on target. And fluid would not have been expected: had it been fluid-filled, a biopsy would generally not have been needed. Fluid filled areas are nearly always nothing to worry about.
