Spontaneous bruise and lump in left breast

Spontaneous bruise and lump in left breast

A few days ago, a bruise appeared on my left breast about two inches to the right of the areola. I had not bumped into anything or injured the breast that I am aware of. The bruise is starting to fade now, but when I was in the shower this morning I decided to press on the bruise to see if it was sore and I felt a very small lump directly under the bruise. Naturally I am very concerned now. I have had a cyst in my right breast before but there was no bruise associated with it. So I assume that I should make an appt. with my dr. to see what the lump is. I just had my yearly mammogram last month and it was completely normal, so whatever this is it just appeared out of nowhere. I do self exams and never felt it before the bruise appeared. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks....

Dear Saimo Uno:  In most cases, bruises appear due to trauma.  Sometimes we remember bumps - other times not. If your mammogram was recent, it is possible that this may have caused a bruise.  It is possible that the "lump" could be a cyst ro blood clot but since it is new, it is best that it be evaluated.

My mammogram was six weeks ago, so I don't think I would just now be getting a bruise from that. I suppose I could have bumped my breast and just don't remember. But in any case I have an appt. with my primary care dr. tomorrow for a breast exam and we'll go from there. Since this lump is new I don't want to ignore it. Thanks for your time, I greatly appreciate it.

I had my breast exam yesterday. The dr. seems to think the bruise and lump is from an injury and he didn't seem to feel it was anything serious, but to be on the safe side he has ordered a diagnostic mammogram. That is scheduled for the 15th of this month....but what should I do if the lump happens to get smaller or go away before then? Should I still get the mammogram?
