Stage 4 breast cancer

Stage 4 breast cancer

My mom will be 53 years old in August and was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. However, earlier that year one surgent had told her the mass she had on her right breast had to do with a cosmetic surgery and was nothing he could do (note: his "diagnosis" was based on his opinion with no further exams to rely on). So a few months went by and at the time was suffering with constant bleeding from her vagina do to her miomas.  Her gynecologist suggested she check back and after bouncing around they finally decided to do a byopsi which concluded with cancerous mass in her right breast.  After the diagnosis nothing was done to start treatment and so we kept going to the hospital to push the process or something and get her something to control her pain.  Finally we arrived at a hospital that have provided with treatment so far. None the less, she is going into her 3rd surgery and I've heard that the more you open up the more it spreads. This third surgery is the mastectomy and is what we had suggested for them to do since the beginning but it seems like it continues to spread as they open her up. Im scared and need a professional, outside the situation, point of view.

I was so sorry to read your story of your mom's BC apparently being missed earlier, and then  not being diagnosed until it had progessed, and still not being treated for quite a while after that!

All of this must be very frustrating and confusing and frightening for all of you.

However, operating to remove  breast cancer does not cause it to spread. It is more likely that by the time she finally began tx, it was already at an advanced stage that involves continuing spread.

As the doctors have no doubt explained, Stage 4 is not considered curable. The goals become instead to slow the spread, control pain, and help the patient to maintain quality of life as long as possible.

Best wishes to both you and your mom,
