Status of Taxol

It seems as though the status of Taxol as an adjuvant therapy for breast cancer is bouncing back and forth.  First, I heard that it was recommended, now I hear that it is not.

My wife is about ½ way through her FEC 100 chemotherapy regimen for her stage two, three node positive, grade three infiltrating ductal carcinoma.  She is 44 and pre-menopausal.  Should she be asking her oncologist about Taxol for after her FEC treatments are completed?  If so, should that be done before or after radiation?

Dear Patvlaw, Currently Taxol is an approved chemotherapy for use as treatment of metastatic breast cancer.  It’s use as adjuvant therapy is still being evaluated in clinical trials. The question being asked in some of the trials is - by adding Taxol after the standard chemotherapy combinations such as CEF, does this improve the overall outcome (improved  disease free survival, overall survival)?   Meaning, what we’d like to know is, if we are giving a drug that has the potential to cause more side effects, and delaying radiation treatment until that drug is given, will this benefit the patient in the long run?  Until the data from the trials are evaluated we don’t know whether the addition of Taxol has merit in the adjuvant setting.
