Stereotactic Core

A friend recently met with a surgeon regarding a stereotactic core needle breast biopsy that was recommended for some microscopic calcifications.  The process sounds good but there is one question we both have.  She was told that something like a "micro chip" would be inserted into the area where the tissues were taken from in order to point out the trouble area in future mamograms -- so they could specifically watch the area.  What are these "micro chips?"  How long have they been used and are there any side effects from having something foreign put into your breast?  Is this a necessary step?  Thank you for your help.

I found this on Yahoo Health: One or more titanium or stainless steel clips are then placed to mark the spot where the tissue was removed. The clips are necessary because, in a matter of weeks, fatty breast tissue will fill in the hollow area. Without marking the area internally, there would be no accurate way to know where the biopsy was actually done.

I currently have one of these clips in my upper right Breast. It feels sore around my cycle. Other than that, it's okay.....

I am new to all this as well, but from what was explained to me it is a tiny, tiny little piece of metal I guess, would be placed in the breast. This will show up on all future mammograms to mark the area that had the calcs. As far as how long they have been used, I don't know. I haven't heard of any side effects from it. Sorry I can't be of more help.
