Sudden lump in breast
I woke up this morning with a very tender left breast, and when i examined it later on today I found that there was a hard lump just below the nipple. I am on the combined pill, and I am woriied about what this could mean- breast cancer or a cyst or other? Help, or any advice would be much appreciated
this should have gone to POST surgery counseling answered in March 2001.sorry

I am not aware of a way to reverse the amnesic effects of Versed. In the long run, I think counseling may be of greater benefit to you. You might start with asking your surgeon about the person she usually recommends. Perhaps it is a person who is very familiar with situations like yours. I'm sorry that this is not really a comment but a question. My 7 year old daughter found 2 lumps in her right breast last week. I took her to her pediatrician who was a little concerned about them because that did not have the normal presentation of breast buds. We were referred to a radiologist for an ultrasound. He could not confirm what they were but did not recommend a biopsy at her age and referred me back to the pediatrician for a course of action. They are round and are not under the nipple and are sometimes tender to the touch. Please help us! I am very nervous and upset about the situation. Please refer this to the right people dso that I can get some answers. Thank you.
Hi my name is Sharon and just came across a quarter size solid lump on my left breast. I am 40 years old and had a total hysterectomy two months ago and was put on the estrogen patch, I also had my entire thyroid removed about a month ago and have been taking the drug Armour for hormone replacement therapy. Just wanted to know if any one had any insights as to what this lump could mean, obviously my body has been through quite a bit lately and the last thing I need is something else to deal with but I would like to be informed so I am not jumping to all the wrong conclusions. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
also the needle biopsy doesn't show the real results either. I had a negative mammogram, the needle thing (negative again), but, the lumpectomy showed positive for malignant phyllodes. I am of the opinion that the only true course of action, is to have the lump removed and then examined. Many women on the usenet breast cancer newsgroup now have breast cancer due to the "it's just a lump" mentality of their doctors.

Many doctor believe "Young women don't get breast cancer" and it is a myth! Young women do get breast cancer-- I am proof of it. I found a lump in my breast when I was only 26, which was allowed to grow and spread because of delayed diagnosis. I have no family history or other risk factors yet I have stage IV Breast cancer.
What is scary is when young women do get breast cancer, the cancers tend to be very agressive and should be dealt with as soon as possible but are usually dismissed by physicians who have bought into the idea that only older women get BC. If you find a lump in your breast make an appointment to see your doctor a.s.a.p., if they refuse to do a mammography due to your age INSIST that you need one, if the lump doesn't show up on the mammogram then ask for a needle biopsy. Whatever you do, DON'T let them treat you like nothing more than a statistic! You are a precious young woman and deserve compassionate medical CARE. And don't let them convence you that you are paranoid and that your lump is nothing to worry about! I was too trusting of my doctors and that mistake may cost me my life-- don't make the same mistake.

Hello, you are quite mature and responsible to be so dilligent about your health at such a young age. I have posted a lot lately and hope I am not becoming an alarmist. I am in the middle of cancer treatment and am adamant about getting the word out there about cancer in young women. I am 32, more than twice your age but still considered young.
Please ask your doctor immediately about Inflammatory Breast Cancer. This occurs often with a sudden lump. there is not much mystery here. You need antibiotics and if it doesn't clear up fast 7 days at most, you need a biopsy. I have had loads of friends who have had biopsies and had NO CANCER. Biopsies are not bad and it is so great to rule out the cancer.
If someone tells you it is impossible for you to have cancer at your age, they are WRONG. RARE, yes, Impossible, no. There is a girl on the www.ibcresearch.org and www.ibcsupport.org that died this week of Inflammatory Breast Cancer at 16. The main reason is that she did not tell her mom or doc that anything was going on for MONTHS. Her name was Andi and her story is on the message boards. Print it and take it to your doc if you have to. You will be doing us all a favor by getting the word out.
I bet you don't have cancer, I bet you have a benign cyst, please get it checked out. IBC is very serious. Cancer is very serious.
I think you young girls need more info about the pill. be sure you are on a low dose. They say there is no connection but I am not bying it. I started the pill at 20 and took it for a long time.
Would you do me one favor in addition to getting this checked out immediately? Can you tell me how you have gotten your education about Breast Cancer. Do they tell you about it in school, teen magazines? There is a sight called www.youngsurvival.org that is great. I am a member and one of our primary objectives is to get the word out to young women. via high school etc.
Again, I admire you SO MUCH for staying on top of your health, with this kind of dilligence and the realization that just because you are something: young, non smoker, meat eater, non meat eater, does NOT mean you are immune..... you are sure to live a long healthy life.

Dear worried 15 year old: At your age, breast cancer is very unlikely. Also, breast cancer is usually painless. The lump you feel could very well be cystic, although "the pill" can sometimes help with this. If it gets worse or doesn't go away after a menstrual cycle, consider seeing a doctor for evaluation.
cancer at your age is nearly unheard of. And something that hurts and shows up suddenly isn't cancer. It could be a cyst, although that's not common either at your age. There's a harmless tumor called a fibroadenoma that's seen a lot in teenagers. It's virtually certain to be nothing serious. However, the only way to find out it to have it checked.
