Sugery or not for atypical ductal hyperplasia

Sugery or not for atypical ductal hyperplasia

I have ADH which was diagnosed 0ct 2009.. However, I had 2 biopsies  already on upper right quadrant on right (A4)  *breast i.e., -- 2007 and oct 2009 concerning microcalcifications... In Oct 2009, had also p63 and SMMS pathology test of breast specimen and Positive for myoepithelials in A4  and "not cancerous".   I had nov 12, 2010 mammogram and recommending surgery to remove 'walnut' size of the area (right upper quadrant on right breast).
The reason for surgery is precautionary measure to avoid from developing cancer in next 5 or 10 years, or more since I have a sister who had breast cancer. Also, so as not to worry about it anymore.. Should i go for surgery?  thanks for replying and advise

Hi,
Atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH) is NOT cancer or a pre-cancerous lesion. But it means that you are predisposed to "increased" risk of  developing breast cancer in the future.... particularly because you also have a strong family history of breast cancer.(your sister)
ADH means that there is an area in the duct of the breast that has an increased number of cells (hyperplasia) and Atypical means that these cells look different than normal .
It is standard procedure when one is diagnosed with ADH ,to have the area of concern surgically removed, obtain clean margins and then followed by other treatment recommended by your Surgeon.
If I were you I would certainly follow the surgeon's recommendation and proceed with the surgery...No doubt about it!
Wishing you all the best and good luck!!
