Hi, Trish,
I've also had the wire localization procedure twice now (one time they had to insert two wires!) before biopsies and zouzi is right---it's a little unnerving but not painful. I thought the idea of someone poking a wire into my breast was kindof scary, but it was way less frightening than I thought. The staff is usually very compassionate and will try to make sure you're as comfortable as possible. Just don't be afraid to tell them if you're feeling uncomfortable during the procedure or ask any questions you need to.
The biopsies are really easy as long as you make sure your surgeon knows you don't want to be awake for them. Surgeons are very accomodating in trying to make it as easy as possible on you-they don't want a tense and frightened patient any more than you want to be one!
Recovery is usually quick and relatively painless, too. I went dancing the night after one of mine! You'll be given all the information you need afterwards and some pain medication if needed. ( I used mine only the day of the procedure and that night to sleep---after that, Tylenol or another OTC med worked fine.)
Good luck to you and I'm hoping your biopsy is an easy one. I'm also wishing you benign results. Please let us know how you're doing if you wish by adding a note to this thread.
Hugs from a Michigan neighbor,

Hi,
What your doctor has explained,is that you are going to have a wire localization biopsy. The procedure begins using the mammogram as a guide, the radiologist locates the area of concern, numbs the area with a local anesthetic, and then inserts a thin wire into the breast so that the tip rests in the suspicious area. The wire is kept in place with a gauze dressing. A second mammogram is taken to confirm that the wire is in the right place.
I had this procedure done before surgery and it's really not painful and you shouldn't be scared or worry about it.Before surgery you will receive medication to help you relax and sleep.Sometimes, general anesthesia is used. Ask you surgeon which type of anesthesia will be used for your surgery procedure.
For full information about the procedure, you can read the article I provide below.

Wishing you all the best and benign results!
