Surgical excision

Should usual ductal hyperplasia with stromal fibrosis 2.0 x 0.5 x 0.3 cm. be subject for Surgical Excision after Ultrasound guided core needle biopsy with negative finding from pathology test result?  If it is suspicious abnormal cell why not have Surgical Excision biopsy procedure instead of Core needle biopsy? Why need to have both procedures? Thank you.

Hi.

Surgical excision is indeed an option if you and the doctors think that there is good reason that the lump is not adequately represented by the small core biopsy.  It is indeed possible that there can be some sites of atypia in other parts of the lump that is not sampled by the biopsy.   Other characteristics of the tumor that would  make excision more justifiable are the presence of irregular or gritty lump borders or hard fixed nodules.

Again, the decision to go in for an excision will depend on the overall judgment and comfort levels of your doctors, but yes, this is a viable option.

Regards.
