Surgical removal for suspected fibroadenoma

by ladybird1021, Aug 20, 2009 04:47PM
I'm 23 and have a lump that I estimate to be about 1.6 cm in my right breast. I discovered it about 10 months ago and right away went in for an ultrasound, mammogram and fine needle biopsy.  The results were inconclusive because not enough cells were taken from the biopsy to make a clear diagnosis. I was told it was most likely a fibroadenoma and was given a choice to have another biopsy, have the lump surgically removed or wait and follow-up in 6 months with another ultrasound. I wasn't too worried about the lump and was told they do sometimes go away on their own so I chose to go with the ultrasound follow-up.
I just went in today for my follow-up and it appears the lump has grown by 3 mm.  I was told there is a 98% chance it is non-cancerous but was recommended to have a core needle biopsy or have it surgically removed.  The thought of it growing anymore inside me is worrisome whether or not it is cancer.  If I opt for the route of surgery, I am very concerned by breast will not look the same or be a different size than my left breast.
Can anyone who has had this done share their thoughts and experiences?  I have size A breasts and am 5'3" and 130 lbs.

First of all, 3mm isn't much of an increase in size. If this is a Fibroadenoma then you may have more develop over time. They can be removed but are often just left alone; especially at your age. I would think the biopsy would be the best option at this point since you are concerned about the effect of surgery on your breast. I don't know that the removal would change the shape of your breast all that much since the mass is, by your estimate, about 1/2 in. or so. The core biopsy can tell you exactly what the mass is and you can have it removed if it grows quite large in the future or just leave it alone if it remains stable.   Regards ...
