Suspicious Rash

For about a year my right nipple has been itching and I have now developed a terrible rash on my breast as well. I have been to a dermatologist and I went and saw my doctor. I had a mammogram and ultrasound that the tech. said showed a cyst. I do have some pain under my arm where my lymph nodes are.My question is, should I be concerned about Breast Cancer. I was thinking about insisting on being referred to a breast clinic and asking for a biopsy of the area to be sure.Some advice would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Lisa Ann:  In terms of breast cancer, an itching nipple and scaling skin aroung the nipple can be associated with at type of cancer called Paget's disease.  This is fairly uncommon.  More commonly, skin on the breast, not unlike other skin, is subject to skin problems.  Since you are concerned, however, consider an appointment with a breast specialist who can evaluate your situation and determine whether your problem might be related to your breast or whether it is a dermatologic problem.

If the rash is involving the whole,  or most of the breast, it's more likely a skin problem than cancer. But a rash localized on the nipple can be of concern. Presumably the dermatologist is aware of this. But there's certainly no harm in being seen by a breast specialist. It might ease your mind.

the itching intially started on the nipple and progressed to around the nipple which is now getting scaley. I think anything beyond that is just from scratching while asleep because it doesn't itch while awake. Just the nipple and surrounding the nipple. I also, occasionaly have a greenish brown discharge coming from the nipple itself.
