Swelling of breast just beginning

I am concerned that the swelling  I just noticed on the side of my breast which was operated on is the beginning of Lymphedema. I am one month, one week post-op Lumpectomy and I have noticed the cording mentioned here by others. I am doing wall crawls and making sure I extend my arm  with full ROM not guarding it though my underarm is numb slightly  swollen and tender at times.
I will  call my surgeon  Tuesday if it continues. I am diabetic and want to ward off any problems. I also hope to start  chemotherapy in the next week or two as soon as my new Medicare PPO advantage takes effect and want  to be completely healed and AOK.. Any answers will be very appreciated.

Hi there.

This swelling that you noticed a few weeks after surgery is more of an indication of a seroma rather than that of lymphedema.  Lymphedema does not develop until a few or several years after the operation.

A seroma is a localized collection of fluid and can be drained by your surgeon through a small needle puncture.

Another possibility, since you are diabetic, is the presence of infection.  If this is the case, I believe a course of antibiotics would also be started by your doctor.

The swelling has stopped and I had my first session of Chemo yesterday.
