Swelling after surgery, in right arm

After surgery her right arm swells and hurts tremendiously. She is swolen from her shoulder to the end of her finger tips. They removed her right brest and the gland as well. She has had kimo and is told that everything is ok, but that they can't do anything for the swelling in her right arm. Is there anything or any kind of onintment that can be applied to reduce this swelling or reduce the pain? She is not able to walk, nor can she do a tread mill. Is there a specific diet of food she should consume to maybe help control the swelling?

Dear Hen, What you are describing sounds like lymphedema. Lymphedema is swelling in the arm or leg caused by excess fluid that collects after lymph nodes and vessels are removed by surgery or treated by radiation.  Lymphedema can occur within a few days, months or years after surgery.

Lymphedema can not be cured.  However, with proper care and treatment the affected limb can be restored to a normal  size and shape.  In addition, lymphedema can be treated and controlled so that it does not progress further.  If left untreated, lymphedema can lead to increased swelling and a hardening of the tissue resulting in decreased function and mobility in the affected limb.  It can also lead to chronic infections and other illnesses.

i had breast cancer in my right breast three years ago and i have not been the same since my arm hurt all the time i have had all kind of tests and no one seem to know why., i can hardly sleep at night and i have problems doing anything using my right arm now i am getting swelling
