Swollen left breast, pain in left arm, lump under arm pit

by goodgirl, Dec 16, 2001 12:00AM
Greetings, I've been to 5 different doctors in the past year to check a lump in my arm pit (high, looks like on the muscle). The lump has continued to grow and is associated with occasional throbbing pain and decreased circulation in my left arm from shoulder to fingertips. It's also causing pain and swelling of my left breast, along with nipple a purple color. The surgeon I visited last week did a needle biopsy. The biopsy turned up nothing of huge concern, except for visible epitheleal cells (don't know anything about those, other than they're all over the body!). He wants to remove it this week. He says he's never heard of these symptoms associated with a lump, and neither did the other doctors I visited. Any clue as to what this could be? I do have night sweats occasionaly.

Dear goodgirl:  It is difficult to know without a tissue biopsy.  I think your doctor has the right plan - remove it.  When a pathologist has an opportunity to examine the tissue, it will, hopefully, yield a diagnosis.  And, likewise, its removal will, hopefully, relieve your symptoms.
