TOMOXIFIN FOR ATYPICAL HYPERPLASIA

I RECENTLY SAW AN ONCOLOGIST AND WAS ADVISED TO START TAKING TOMOXIFIN. AFTER READING ABOUT THE SIDE EFFECTS I QUESTIONED WHETHER THE CHANCE OF GETTING BREAST CANCER OUTWEIGHED THESE SIDE  EFFECTS. I AM A HEALTHY 48 YR OLD AND THE DOCTOR STATED I SHOULD HAVE NO SIDE EFFECTS. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF ANYONE CAN CONCUR WITH THE DOCTOR?

I was not sure I wanted to take this drug either.   But, I did start taking it in August and have had minor side affects.  I take it at night and have some minor hot flashes and occassional night sweats, but they are not terrible.  What convinced me to try it was I knew I could always stop taking it if the symptoms were unbearable.

My sister-in-law was on Tomoxifin for 5 years and her biggest side effect was joint pain that acted like arthritis. She blamed the Tomoxifin, and after being off it for a while now, most of her joint pain is gone. So like tmarie58 said, if the sypmtoms are unbearable for you, you can always quite taking it.

As the two previous posters stated ... there are side effects and everyone's reaction to this drug will be different. There is definitely an advantage to taking Tamoxifen as it does reduce your risk of developing breast cancer. Most times the benefit outweighs the side effects you might experience. I would advise that you do take it .... if you find that the side effects are too much for you to tolerate you can always stop the drug or perhaps be switched to another drug.  Regards ....
