Tamoxifen After Radiation for DCIS

Tamoxifen After Radiation for DCIS

Hi,
I am finishing up my 6 week radiation therapy (including 5 "boost" treatment) next week. And I am about to decide on Tamoxifen. I am 45 years old, premenopause, with strong ER positive of 3mm DCIS (lumpectomy in Oct. 2008 with all clear margins), no family history of both breast and ovarian cancers. My surgeon and radiation oncologist recommend Tamoxifen to reduce the risk of recurrence but my personal physician or oncologist mention "too small benefit" than "potential larger side effects". I have only "high cholesterol" (with generally low blood pressure) but no medication has been recommended for it. Does anybody have opinions on Tamoxifen for DCIS?

The advantage is well documented by studies by The Nat. Cancer Institute. Most studies showed 69% less risk of recurrance with ER+ tumors. Every woman does not experience the same side effects from Tamoxifen but this is something you wouldn't know until you started therapy. It is the recommended "standard" but some women choose not to take Tamoxifen. You might seek another opinion from another Oncologist since you have opposing opinions now.  Regards ....
