Tamoxifen and ovary removal

by lucyloo, Aug 25, 2001 12:00AM
I have an ER+ and PR+ diagnosis, haven't seen the oncologist yet, but am wondering if I could have my ovaries removed and take a smaller dose of tamoxifen.  I'm 49 and close to menopause anyway.    Thanks

Dear lucyloo:  Although the ovaries are a primary source of estrogen, they do not account for all of the estrogen in the body.  In other words, removing the ovaries would eliminate most of the estrogen, it would not take care of all of it. Tamoxifen would still be recommended at the standard dose. For this reason, removing the ovaries is not usually done.  Tamoxifen is given to ER/PR + women even if they are post menopausal.
