Tamoxifen for reducing risk; types of hereditary cancer

I have had ( six months ago)oestrogen negative apocrine breast cancer - surgery ( not full mastectomy, all nodes negative), chemo (FEC) and radiotherapy in one breast.
I am 51 and have been thrown into the menopause.
My grandmother, mother and aunt have all had breast cancer, latter two still alive 10 years after recurrence. The latter had oestrogen postive cancer and were prescribed tamoxifen.

1. My doctor thinks the cancer I had was not related to my family history becasue it is of a particular type

2. He has not recommended tamoxifen as it is not likely to help with the current oestrogen negative cancer.

But surely I am still subject to possible genetic risk. Should I not take tamoxifen to avoid getting family related cancer in the other breast. I obviously want to avoid a second bout of chemo if I can ( and survuve longer!).  He says cancer was 2cms and stage one with likely prognosis OK at 10 years say 67%.

Should I pursue the tamoxifen route.  When I spoke he simply said tamoxifen can give you other types of cancer but the risk seems small compared to the other problem.  Pleas help as I am now confused.

Dear Jemina, According to the NIH Consensus Statement on Adjuvant Therapy for Breast Cancer, released November, 2000, hormonal adjuvant therapy should not be recommended to women whose breast cancers are estrogen receptor negative.  Randomized clinical trials have not yet shown that such treatment substantially reduces the likelihood of recurrence or, in the case of tamoxifen, diminish the likelihood of breast cancer in the other breast.
