Tamoxifen

I was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer a year ago May.  I was premenapausal at the time.  I had a mastectomy and four rounds of chemo.  I then started on Tamoxifen.  A few weeks ago I had a complete hysterectomy because of a tumor on my ovary and because of my history with breast cancer.  The was no cancer found.  Yesterday my oncologist suggested that I can stop taking the Tamoxifen because of me having the hysterectomy.  I understand that the purpose of the Tamoxifen is to block estrogen and now I am not producing estrogen.  Does this sound right?

Dear Dannrose, The majority of estrogen production does happen in pre-menopausal women through the ovaries.   In selected instances the ovaries of pre-menopausal women are removed to decrease the amount of estrogen production.  Estrogen can still be produced in small amounts, and has been stored in body fat so there is still a small amount of estrogen available in the body.
