Tamoxifin

Tamoxifin

Had modified radical mastectomy in left breast July 2005 with 7.5cm tumor and 3 positive lymph nodes. Completed 8 rounds of a/c/t and am determining next phase of radiation that dr is suggesting (33 rounds).  Dr is also wanting me to start immediately on tamoxifin (tamoxifen) but I'm concerned about side effects and if there are any other alternative treatments. I am 37 years old and healthy otherwise.

Dear crk1000:  In general, if a breast cancer is estrogen receptor positive, some sort of hormone therapy will likely be recommended.  In premenopausal women, tamoxifen is most often the drug of choice.  Although there are some side effects, tamoxifen is generally pretty well tolerated.  In postmenopausal women, aromatase inhibitors are often recommended instead.  There are currently several large clinical trials going on nationally that are comparing tamoxifen with or without ovarian ablation (shutting down ovarian function either with medications or by surgically removing the ovaries) to an aromatase inhibitor with ovarian ablation in premenopausal women. You should discuss these options and goals of therapy as well as the risk benefit ratio with your doctor who can discuss these options as they pertain to your situation.

My mother was on Tamoxifen for five years.  At the time of her breast cancer, Arimidex wasn't available for postmenopausal women and she was highly estrogen/progesterone positive.  Everyone is different, but her only side effect was weight gain.

I waas diagnosed with LCIS of the right breast after having breast reduction surgery.  I have been on Tamoxifen for 8 months and have no side affects - actually, a lot of women say that it has made them lose weight, and I certainly have.

I started Tamoxifin (tamoxifen) about 3 months ago and I have also had joint and muscle pain.  It seems to be affecting my hips and legs more than any where else.  If anyone speaks to their doctors and they have suggestions, please let us know.
