Taxol long term effects

by Debjane, Jan 01, 2008 12:14PM
I am a 56 year old woman, diagnosed with ER/PR negative, stage 3 breast cancer, 9/06.  I had a lumpectomy, followed by 4 biweekly doses of A/C followed by 8 weekly doses of Taxol which was done in March of 2007.  Ever since finishing chemo I have suffered with stiffness and pain in my knees, elbows and hands.  Is this common?  I was told by my Oncology nurse that this was not related to the neuropathy that I experienced.  I am wondering if the chemo could have triggered or caused osteo arthritis in my joints.
Thank you,
Debjane

Dear Debjane:  Taxol is known to cause muscle and joint pain.  In most cases this occurs after administration and lasts 2-3 days.  Whether this pain is related to the taxol is difficult to evaluate.  It can take months to feel “normal” after chemotherapy but developing arthritis (whether related to chemotherapy or not) is also common.  You may wish to consult with your oncologist and/or a rheumatologist.

I am 49 and also went through chemo treatment with 4 biweekly doses of A/C and 13 weekly doses of Taxol which were completed in March of 2007.  I am still suffering chronic stiffness and pain in my feet/ankles, knees, elbows and hands.  I bouncing back and forth between my oncologist and primary care doctor with "try this and try that" with nothing seeming to help. I was searching for some on-line resources to try to resolve these issues when I saw your posting. So it seems others are experiencing the same side effects from Taxol.
