I am HER2+ 3+; I am finishing A/C.  Which would be better Taxol or Taxotere?

Hi there.

Taxol and Taxotere in this setting may not be different in terms of benefit but you may want to think more regarding practicality and regarding side effects.  Taxol is given for 3 hours IV and has the reputation of having more allergic reactions than Taxotere.  The main side effects of Taxol are neutropenia (low white blood cells), neuropathy, and severe allergic reactions (in about 5% of cases).  Taxotere on the other hand is given for only 1 hour, and is less allergic.  However, Taxotere causes more severe neutropenia, and you may need additional medications like Filgrastim to jack up your white blood counts.

For Her2 +3, you may also want to inquire about receiving Herceptin which is an antibody towards Her2.  This drug is usually incorporated with Taxotere containing regimens as well.

Hope this helps.  Good luck with your treatment.
