Taxotere and Muscle Pain and Fluid Retention

by Nesie47, Apr 30, 2006 12:00AM
I completed neo adjuvant breast cancer chemotherapy (4 AC treatments, 1 Taxol treatment, and 3 Taxotere treatments) almost 3 weeks ago.  After my last Taxol treatment I started experiencing swelling of my thighs and ankles.  I also have thigh, leg, and arm muscle pain and weakness.  Is there anything that can be done to relieve this and if not, how long before these side effect goes away?  My surgery is scheduled for this coming Tuesday--do these side effects pose any risk during surgery?

Dear Nesie47:  Swelling and fatigue and weakess are both common side effects of taxotere.  In general, side effects will begin to resolve within a few weeks of stopping the drug.  It is not always immediate though, and there is variation from person to person.  If you have not done so, you should let your oncologist know and address the question of pain relievers and surgery with him/her.
