Taxotere and sun

Taxotere and sun

I had breast cancer for the 2nd time (2 different types, BRCA 1 positive) 5 years ago and was given Taxotere chemotherapy.  I have had problems with my skin ever since and the past couple of years ,when I attempt to be in the sun, whether on vacation or in my own pool with sunscreen, I develop small raised bumps all over my arms.  These bumps are very itchy and do not respond well to the treatments I have tried. Various lotions for sunburn and lately I have used a prescription ointment prescribed for skin irritations when I was going through chemotherapy. Nothing seems to work and I am wondering if this is a direct side effect of the Taxotere and is there anything I can do for this, other than stay out of the sun??  Thanks.

Dear molliesmama, It is not unusual to be more sensitive to sunlight while receiving chemotherapy treatments.  This is why protection from sun exposure is recommened during treatments.  This far away from chemotherapy treatments (five years?) we would not link your sensitivity to the sun directly to the chemotherapy, many factors could be more directly responsible.  A dermatologist would best evaluate and advise you about precautions for your individual situation currently.
